"This morning i took a walk through the woods down to the spring - the loveliest spot. Oh it was all so beautiful! The calm, fresh loveliness of the woods seemed to enter into my very spirit with voiceless harmony - the harmony of clear blue skies, mossy trees .... All the little fears and chafings shrank into nothing and vanished. Standing there beneath that endless blue dome, deep with the breathing of universal space ... I put my arm around a lichened old spruce and laid my cheek against its rough side - it seemed like an old friend." - LMM

With a posting like that, how can a comment add to it? Even poking fun at it seems . . . not right. But poor old LMM seems very steeped in melancholy. I wonder if she would have been considered 'clinically depressed' in our day of quickly wanting to label people who seem to be outside our idea of what the norm is . . . maybe I'm reading way to much into that passage. Maybe it's just a pretty passage. But it seems to have some overtones of gloominess (or LONEness - hmmm). . . man i can't really get it. But then, I'm just a techy guy (and not even so good at that) steeped in mechanical/controlled machines.
hmmm...to me this suggests a personality that can never be alone or sad/melancholy out in the woods
(but perhaps what you are getting at is a sense that the friendship/joy found in the forest contrasts with an aloneness elsewhere?)
not so much gloominess, as a different way of understanding the world and interaction...
or am I now reading to much into it? :)
Maybe i've got an advantage knowing the author's life situation (or imagining i know), or maybe i've just applied my own perspective as if it was hers ... but i see this person as a thoughful, complex and misunderstood soul who finds simple, refreshing comfort - a kinship even? like nature's in her blood - in the quiet woods.
That's all
You folks are w a y too philosophical .. . .
